Abstract

Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common and disabling side effect and a major limitation of medical treatment of cancer. The diagnosis is mainly based on the precise history to determine the time sequence of drug administration and symptom development. Electrodiagnostic study is helpful to confirm both the presence of neuropathy and the nature of nerve injury. Various agents have been tried to prevent the development of CIPN and to manage the neuropathic pain. Clinical trials specifically targeted to CIPN are not sufficient in amount and the results are not satisfactory in supporting the efficacy. Because most of CIPN is reversible at the initial presentation, careful differentiation of the possible etiologies of neuropathy and early change in regiment are important to prevent severe disabling CIPN.
